Liverpool Plains Shire Council recently held a Tech Savvy Seniors Program at the Quirindi Library Community Hub to assist those in the community that are most in need of digital skills training.

Many older Australians are at risk of being digitally excluded in an ever increasing online and digitally connected world. Seniors represent a large and growing segment of the Australian population.  According to the Australian Digital Inclusion Index , seniors are the most digitally excluded age group in Australia.

Tech Savvy Seniors NSW is a partnership between the NSW Government, the State Library of NSW and Telstra and the digital literacy training program was designed to help seniors develop the skills and confidence to get connected and participate in the online world. The program aims to increase digital inclusion, reduce social isolation and increase access to online information and services among older people.

Mayor Doug Hawkins said Council held ten Tech Savvy Seniors sessions at the Community Hub with 40 digitally minded seniors attending different sessions.  The program covered a range of basic digital skills including how to use a tablet and smartphone, navigate social media, use email and shop online.

“It is important that seniors in our community are aware of the support that is available to build confidence in using digital world.  Our participants in the sessions were keen to attend any future programs and announcements will be made on future dates’” he concluded.
